[1] The meaning of 奏でる (kanaderu) (to play a stringed instrument) is a bit lost when the verb ‘play’ is used alone. I took the liberty to make it more obvious and understandable.
[2] The entire sentence would mean to “steer an updraft”, 上昇気流 meaning “ascending air currents”. However, for easier reading, I went for the above - Impish Crow does have a song titled “Ride the Wind”, after all!
